New Animal Fighting Legislation
March 4, 2008

The Richmond Animal League is elated to learn that the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation that will strengthen the animal fighting laws in the commonwealth. Upon Governor Kaine’s signature, all forms of animal fighting will be illegal. It is our hope that the penalties imposed on those convicted of animal fighting will discourage others from following the path Michael Vick chose.

Richmond Animal League is one of eight animal welfare agencies across the country who was granted custody of some of Vick’s pit bulls. We have watched these amazing dogs blossom with as they have learned love and compassion. They have gone from being shy, scared creatures to dogs who love to romp and play; who crave human companionship and who have started on the paths that will lead them to become ambassadors for the breed.

On behalf of animals throughout this state who are or have been subjected to the horrors of fighting, we commend the General Assembly for taking a firm stand against this wretched blood sport.
