Operation Silent Night

Operation Silent Night 2017

Seven years ago during a November Wednesday staff meeting someone tossed out an outlandish idea to get every animal home for the holidays. "We'll call it 'Operation Silent Night!'" Silence followed, but we never let go of the notion. So, we tried. We told our volunteers and our community what we were doing. We reduced adoption fees and opened our doors long hours. We promoted every animal in our care. And on December 23rd, 2011, our shelter was empty for the first time. Ever. We invited people to join us. There was an echo in the shelter that made our most experienced veterans cry. We haven't stopped this amazing adoption initiative since that first year. It has become such a wonderful event that we are able to keep filling our shelter even as we try to empty it.

All adoption fees are reduced to $10 for the Operation Silent Night event, from Dec. 8th - Dec. 22nd.

Sponsorship opportunities for the 7th annual holiday adoption event now available. Contact Kaicee@ral.org for more information.

Luminaria Ceremony

Join us as we light up the night and listen to the beautiful silence of an empty shelter, celebrating the animals who have found a new loving home just in time for the holiday, and remembering the pets and people who are held near and dear to our hearts. The 2017 Luminaria Ceremony will be held December 22, the final evening of Operation Silent Night. The event will begin at 5:30pm with the lighting of the luminaries. Guests are welcome to walk around and visit the shelter. The ceremony will start at 6:00pm.

How you can help:

1. ADOPT (and encourage others to do so)
Our shelter is full of amazing animals. If you are considering adding a pet to your family, consider adoption! Our adoption counselors are available to help you through the adoption process and answer any questions you may have before adopting a new pet. All of our pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before going to their new homes. All adoption fees are reduced to $10. Check out our website, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for featured pets!
For more information on adoption, email adopt@ral.org or call 804.379.0046.

2. FOSTER
Those wishing to foster for Operation Silent Night will need to pick up the foster pet after 7pm on December 23. Animals can begin to come back to the shelter on December 26. For more information, email cynthia@ral.org or call 804.379.0046 x113. Foster homes are an important piece of the puzzle that has helped RAL remain a no-kill shelter - plainly put, fostering saves lives. Aside from creating space for more animals, foster homes give our pets a much needed break from what can be a very stressful kennel environment. It is often in foster homes that we are allowed a glimpse of a dog or cat's true personality, helping us to find a home in which they will best fit. If you have the time and the space, please consider fostering one of our amazing animals. RAL provides the food, litter, medicines, and veterinary care - you provide the love.

3. SPREAD THE WORD
The more people hear our message, the better. While not everyone can adopt or foster a pet, sharing information about our pets is an enormous help! Share our Operation Silent Night initiative on Facebook, Twitter, your blog, the library and your office. You can even spread the word without saying a thing by purchasing an Operation Silent Night t-shirt (available now soon  at the shelter) of share a poster (available here). The more people who know about our mission, the better chance our animals have of making it home for the holidays!

4. DONATE

Help offset the cost of reduced adoption fees by donating to the Richmond Animal League, Richmond's oldest no-kill non-profit animal shelter. Your contribution, combined with others, helps RAL continue the mission to provide hope, help, and homes for animals in need.
