Heartworm is the silent killer.
This disease affects dogs and cats and is caused by mosquitoes.
Baby heartworms enter the bloodstream when the mosquito bites. These babies circulate until they arrive in the right side of the heart. The female can grow to 18 inches long and males 12 inches. These adults wrap around the atrium and ventricle and cause the heart to work harder and weakening it. The disease is easily prevented. Have pets tested and kept on heartworm preventative year round.
